In the file mcmthesis.dtx, line 814,
\RenewEnviron{abstract}{\xdef\@abstract{\expandonce\BODY}}
this command doesn't work. We can replace it by the following:
\let\abstract\relax \let\endabstract\relax \NewEnviron{abstract}{\xdef\@abstract{\expandonce\BODY}}
